Heading Sensors

Willow Technologies Limited www.willow.co.uk introduces the new MEMS based, FieldForce Trax AHRS module from PNI. Designed for life saving robotics, where unmanned vehicles need to perform progressively more complex tasks, requiring increasingly robust and accurate heading and orientation information.

The new FieldForce Trax AHRS module provides unparalleled heading accuracy when static, while moving and when encountering magnetic distortion. Trax employs a filtering algorithm that intelligently fuses Reference Magnetic Sensors with gyros and accelerometers, to overcome errors due to erratic motion and changes in the local magnetic field.

Said Martin Pearce, Marketing Director of Willow Technologies ‘Many AHRS modules in the market leave too much room for error and lose heading when encountering magnetic distortion, they suffer from errors when experiencing erratic motion and often, even in a static environment don’t provide accurate heading.’

This small device measures 3.5 × 4.3 × 1.0 cm and weighs just 9g. With a 360º heading range, the static accuracy is 0.3º rms and in the presence of magnetic transient and / or dynamic motions 2º rms. Tilt range is ±90 of pitch; ±180 of roll, with resolution at 0.1º and repeatability being 0.05ºrms. Its maximum dip angle is 70º.

‘The affordable Trax is priced for commercial use, delivering more reliable heading than AHRS modules that cost twice as much.’ Continued Pearce.

Utilising RS232 & USB communication interfaces, Supply voltage (unregulated) is 3.6 – 5 VDC, current draw (continuous output) 60mA with operating and storage temperatures both at -40 to +85ºC.

‘Trax is the first AHRS that stays ‘on track’ even through magnetic fields’. Concluded Pearce.
