Willow Technologies Limited www.willow.co.uk introduces the KXCNL Accelerometer with Dual User-Programmable State Machines, from Kionix. This incredible device comes in a 3 x 3 x 0.9mm, 16 pin package and enables maximum configurability and user-programmability for consumer applications.

The device has user-selectable ranges 2g, 4g, 6g and 8g and user-programmable ODR. Its XAC sensor provides outstanding stability over temperature, shock and post-reflow performance.

The KXCNL is a configurable accelerometer with dual state machines allowing designers to dynamically program the device for numerous applications and to self test. The KXCNL’s dual state machines allow the device to simultaneously run multiple applications at the chip level, taking significant processing load off the system’s main applications processor and conserving power.

Said Martin Pearce, Marketing Director at Willow Technologies Ltd, ‘The KXCNL enables a wide combination of applications, from basic screen rotation, to more sophisticated programs such as freefall detection, pedometers, tap / double-tap, power management and more’.

The KXCNL allows applications to be swapped out “on the fly,” providing designers with a new level of flexibility. To assist customers in adapting to this new flexibility, Kionix is providing a library of pre-written state programs, while still allowing customers to write their own state programs, if they choose.

‘Customers increasingly want complete solutions, not just components, from their sensor suppliers. Kionix has long been a leader in providing solutions with embedded algorithms. With the KXCNL, designers have the ability to develop products with even more functionality and flexibility using small footprint state machine programmes running on the accelerometer ASIC’, continued Pearce.

The KXCNL also helps drive down overall power consumption on a device, current consumption is 2 - 250μA and the operating voltage is 1.7V to 3.6V, with an internal voltage regulator.

‘This solution offers users the best of both worlds - more capability with lower power’, concluded Pearce.
